The Boy in the Bathroom Mirror

FROM MY DESK / JUSTIN HATCHETT

He practises a hard face
above the sink.
Jaw forward.
Eyes dry.
No visible country
in need of help.
He does not know
the mirror is rehearsal,
not law.
One day a man will return,
wash blood from those knuckles,
and tell him:
you were never weak.
You were nine,
and nobody brought
the right language.
