Apology in Work Boots

FROM MY DESK / JUSTIN HATCHETT

He cannot say sorry
without feeling naked.
So he arrives Saturday
with timber,
a drill,
and the wrong screws.
He fixes the step
he broke while leaving.
She watches from the doorway.
Repair is not forgiveness.
Labour is not language.
Still,
when he finally says it,
the word stands sturdier
for having brought tools.
