Father, Sleeping

For once
he is not keeping watch.
His glasses rest
on the newspaper.
One hand remains curled
as if holding a tool
inside the dream.

I lower the television.
Cover his knees.
The man who stood guard
at every fever
finally leaves the gate to me.
I sit nearby
and keep the world quiet.
