The Good Knife

FROM MY DESK / JUSTIN HATCHETT

My father keeps one knife
sharper than conversation.
It slices rope,
fruit,
the tape on difficult parcels.
He taught me:
never point it at a person,
never leave it open,
know where the edge is
before you reach.
Years later,
I realise
he was teaching anger.
